The MS-CC Technical Webinar Series is designed to provide hands-on and informational training for MS-CC community members, facilitated by internal and external subject matter experts. This initiative focuses on building technical capacity through interactive sessions that prioritize skill-based learning.

Session Overview: Join us on June 10 for a virtual workshop on Jetstream2, a flexible, user-friendly cloud computing environment available to researchers and educators at no cost through support from the National Science Foundation. You’ll hear an overview of Jetstream2, including how to gain access and various example use cases, learn best practices for managing resources and adding users, and create a virtual instance to explore Jetstream2 for yourself.

Jenn Armstrong, Research Cloud Services at Indiana University:
Jenn entered the wide world of research computing in 2023 after spending most of her career working in marketing and communications. Her role on the Jetstream2 team is largely focused on allocating resources to new and existing users, as well as providing support to the Jetstream2 community—no two days are ever the same! She lives in Bloomington, Indiana with her family.

Caleb Bright-Hughes, Research Cloud Services at Indiana University:
After completing a doctoral degree in physics, Caleb joined the research computing community at Indiana University in 2024. His work on Jetstream2 includes improving documentation, familiarizing new users with Jetstream2 and cloud computing, and troubleshooting errors for advanced use cases. He lives in Martinsville, Indiana with his wife and their pets and dedicates his free time to coaching academic programs at the local high school.

Session Overview: This technical webinar was designed to introduce researchers and cyberinfrastructure professionals to using containers on shared computing resources, with a specific focus on deployment via the OSPool. The session combined presentation and demonstration to provide both conceptual understanding and practical guidance.

Andrew Owen, Ph.D.

Andrew has been a Research Computing Facilitator for the OSPool and OSDF for three years, based out of the Center for High Throughput Computing (CHTC) at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He’s helped numerous users deploy their software in container environments, from writing guides, creating example recipes, to troubleshooting difficult builds. Prior to CHTC, he received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he applied and developed quantum mechanical methods in the study of small molecules of astrochemical interest. He collaborates with his research group in his spare time, developing open source programs in continued support of the research.
